Light distillates are refined oil products of crude oil that have the lowest boiling point range. They consist of the lightest molecules and short hydrocarbon chains.
These products are used in a variety of applications, ranging from fuel for vehicles and heating to feedstocks for the petrochemical industry to produce plastics, synthetic rubber, and other chemicals.
Gasoline
A volatile, flammable liquid used primarily as fuel in internal combustion engines.
Naphtha
A light hydrocarbon mixture used as a feedstock to produce high-octane gasoline, as a solvent, and in making various chemicals.
Middle distillates have a higher boiling point range than light distillates. They are collectively referred to as middle distillate fuels, from the fact that they are taken off the middle of a distillation column and encompass a variety of widely used products. These products are essential for transportation (both on the ground and in the air), heating, and as solvents or cleaners.
Kerosene
Used as jet fuel, in heating, and as a cleaning agent or solvent.
Diesel
Primarily used as fuel in vehicles, agricultural machinery, and generators. Diesel has a higher boiling point than gasoline and is used extensively in transportation and industry.
Heating Oil
Similar in composition to diesel, used to heat homes and buildings.
Heavy distillates are the products with the highest boiling points. They require further processing beyond simple distillation to be useful. Heavy distillates and residues are the backbone of many industrial applications, including transportation, power generation, and the construction industry.
Fuel Oils
Used in ships and industrial plants for generating power and heat. These oils are heavier than diesel and encompass a range of products from lighter marine fuels to very heavy bunker fuels.
Lubricating Oils and Greases
These are further refined to remove impurities and mixed with additives to improve performance. They are used for lubrication in automobiles, machinery, and industrial equipment.
Bitumen (Asphalt)
A very heavy residue used in road construction, roofing, and for sealing and waterproofing.
